Radiant heating systems work in essentially the same way as steam and gas-fired hydronic heating. A boiler is still heating water, but it differs in the way that it is distributed. Instead of a radiator or baseboard style units, the heated water is sent through a series of metal or plastic tubes that run through the floor, walls, or ceilings of a room. Radiant systems distribute heat in a more universal pattern than any of the other water based systems; however, these systems can be very expensive to install and difficult to maintain.
Heat pumps are a complex heating system that can double as an air conditioner. It uses electricity to create an extremely efficient heating system. Rather than being passed through a metal coil like baseboard radiators, the electrical current is used to run an electric motor. This means that far less electricity is being used to create heat.
The heat pump can also convert its Freon from a liquid to a gas, or vise versa, transforming the unit into an air conditioner, if necessary.
Gas-Fired, Forced-Air Units
These heating systems can come in either a central unit or a wall unit. In both cases, gas burners heat a large metal chamber that warms the air held there. They differ in the way that the air is distributed. The central unit uses a fan to send the air through ductwork and into the living areas of your home. The wall unit is already placed within the living space, and radiates the heat from the metal chamber into the room.
Gad-fired, forced-air units can provide energy efficiency, depending on the unit that you are using. One thing to consider with these heating systems is their utilization of fans. These fans bring in outside air to warm and eventually send to each area of your home. This outside air can contain dust and allergens, leading to cleaning and health problems if you don't properly use and maintain air filters.
